Service Description

Join us for this special PERSONAL SAFETY EDUCATION/SELF-DEFENCE course designed specifically for the Rainbow communities of Aotearoa New Zealand. This course has been developed by Kia Haumaru, an organisation with over twenty years of experience bringing the self-defence kaupapa to Aotearoa. Self-defence is about disrupting violence to give yourself a chance to get away. How to disrupt violence is different for different people, depending on how you are perceived by society. Learn simple and effective skills for increasing personal and collective safety in a wide variety of situations. Learn about your rights, setting boundaries and how to disable a larger, stronger attacker. In addition, this course will cover: - Basic physical techniques – kicks, punches, other strikes and blocks - Some evasive techniques - Interactive kōrero about relationship safety The course is split into two three-hour sessions. Attendance on both course dates is required for completion of the course. As koha to help cover Radiqal Movement's expenses in the organisation and facilitation of this course, we are asking for a suggested-fee of $20. However, we have the option of $10 or to email us to access one of our free reserved spots - no questions asked. If you have the capacity to give more, we would absolutely appreciate it. People of all genders (aged 16+) are welcome. Please note, a brief one-on-one kōrero between yourself and one of our staff members will take place once you have signed up. This kōrero is to ensure this course is safe and suitable for you. Self-defence and violence can be confronting subjects to engage with, particularly for LGBTQ+ folk who are disproportionately more likely to experience harm. We make it our top priority to create a safe, non-judgmental space for whakawhanaungatanga (connecting) and akoranga (learning). Location: Grey Lynn Community Centre, 510 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021.
