PRIDE HĪKOI IN THE WAITĀKERE RANGES
What To Expect
Join us for a very special collaborative Pride Month hīkoi with Radiqal Movement, the Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatāpui-Wāhine o Aotearoa, and the Arataki Visitor Centre. Welcoming all LGBTQIA+ and takatāpui folk, this event combines movement, connection, and Te Taiao for a wholesome Saturday outing you won’t want to miss. We’ll begin at the Arataki Visitor Centre, where we’ll take time to explore an exhibition curated by the Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatāpui-Wāhine o Aotearoa, celebrating queer stories and history. From there, we’ll enjoy a relaxed 45-minute round-trip walk to the normally inaccessible Jacobson’s Depot, which requires strict Watercare permission to enter. Along the way, we’ll get a rare glimpse of the Rainforest Express miniature railway and an abandoned tourist train that’s been left to rust for over a decade. After the walk, we’ll regroup back at the Visitor centre to share some kai and refreshments, creating space to connect with fellow attendees and celebrate our wonderful community during Pride month. Details: Date: Saturday, 21st February 2026 Location: Meet at the Arataki Visitor Centre, 300 Scenic Drive, Oratia, Waitakere 0604 Time: Meet at 9:45AM, for a sharp 10AM start. Difficulty: Estimated walking time 45 minutes, 2 KM round trip What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water bottle, sun-protection (sun-block, hats etc), any additional food you’d like to bring, any required medication (inhaler etc), an adventurous community spirit.
