Service Description

Join us for a three-part waterfall winter series exploring the stunning Kitekite Falls, Fairy Falls, and Karekare Falls. These community-driven, social walks and swims offer our local LGBTQ+ communities a chance to get outside and explore the whenua together this Winter. Josh McNally (Ia, they, he), Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tahu - our guide - brings over a decade of outdoor leadership experience alongside social work expertise, specialising in supporting Takatāpui, gender-diverse, and Rainbow folk. From managing disability youth teams to advising on diversity and inclusion for Scouts Aotearoa, Josh is deeply passionate about helping others thrive and live their fullest lives. 1) Kitekite Falls: Approx. 1 hr / 2.75km return; 'easy-intermediate' walk (a well-formed track with some steps and uneven surfaces). 2) Fairy Falls: Approx. 1.5hr / 3km return; 'intermediate' walk (an incredibly scenic walk featuring a large amount of stairs in the second half). 3) Karekare Falls: Approx. 10min / 1km return; 'easy' walk to the beautiful Karekare falls. Each outing includes varied-length walks through bush, time to connect with others, and an optional swim beneath the waterfall for those brave enough to take the plunge into the cold winter wai. We encourage carpooling discussion via our Mermascs Facebook group chat closer to the dates. Health & Safety: Although all health and safety procedures have been carefully considered and put in place, all participants are required to sign a Risk Assessment and Management System (RAMS) form prior to participation. Participants are responsible for their own safety and well-being throughout the activities.
